We had quite a full day today!
This morning we stopped at the village of Adare. Adare was one of the first winners of Ireland’s “tidy town” competition. It is a charming little village with a row of original thatched cottages and historic churches including the first Franciscan monastery in Ireland. For lunch we stopped at Limerick and I got some photos of St Mary’s cathedral. We ate lunch at the Hunt Museum.
This afternoon we stopped at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. This was the first time we’d been in a restored castle and the Folk Park was really interesting. They have recreated a 19th century town and alongside are some houses as they would have been in the 17th and 18 centuries.
There are almost no wooden houses as we know them in Ireland. All the homes, be they castles or peasant huts are masonry. Ireland has lots of limestone…
Thatched roof cottage: Adare
St Mary’s Cathedral: Limerick
